WASHINGTON, Dec 21 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday announced ‍he is appointing Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the special envoy to Greenland.

“Jeff understands how essential ‌Greenland is to ‌our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and ‍indeed, the World,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth ‍Social.

The White House and representatives for Landry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. ‍It was not immediately clear whether Landry, who became governor ‍in ‍January 2024, would need to step down from his gubernatorial ‌role.
