Sep 25 (Field Level Media) – Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes was scratched from his Saturday night start against the San Diego Padres when the former Cy Young Award winner was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with shoulder inflammation.
The throwing shoulder issue comes as Arizona tries to secure the final National League wild-card spot.
Riding a five-game winning streak, Arizona entered Friday two games back of the Philadelphia Phillies, but the Diamondbacks hold the tiebreaker if the teams are tied after the regular season ends Sunday.
The move is retroactive to Tuesday. In a corresponding move, Arizona recalled right-hander Jose Cabrera from Triple-A Reno.
Burnes, 31, signed a six-year, $210 million contract before the 2025 season to join the Diamondbacks, then made just 11 starts before undergoing Tommy John surgery that June.
He did not make his 2026 season debut until Sept. 8 after a June injury to his right teres major muscle delayed his return. In three starts with the Diamondbacks this season, he is 0-0 with a 7.84 ERA in 10 1/3 innings.
A fourth-round pick of the Brewers in the 2014 draft, Burnes won the NL Cy Young Award in 2021 and was a three-time All-Star in his six seasons with Milwaukee. In his lone season with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024, he made his fourth All-Star team.
Overall, Burnes is 63-38 with a 3.20 ERA in 213 games (152 starts) over nine seasons with the Brewers (2018-23), Orioles (2024) and Diamondbacks.
Zac Gallen and Ryne Nelson, former right-handed starters who have been shifted to the bullpen, could see innings Saturday in place of Burnes.
Cabrera, 24, made his major league debut June 21 and is 0-3 with a 4.33 ERA in seven games (five starts).
