Sep 01 (Field Level Media) – Michigan freshman guard Brandon McCoy Jr. will miss the 2026-27 season with an ACL injury to his right knee, head coach Mike Boynton Jr. announced Tuesday.
The five-star prospect sustained the injury early in the Wolverines’ 84-81 exhibition victory last Thursday against Serbian club KK Mega Superbet in Igalo, Montenegro.
The 6-foot-5 McCoy averaged 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals in the first two games of Michigan’s European tour, with both games played in Lithuania.
“Further updates on McCoy’s surgery and recovery status will be provided when available,” the university said in a news release.
McCoy, 18, was ranked as the No. 10 overall prospect in the nation by the 247Sports Composite for the Class of 2026 after starring at California prep powerhouse Sierra Canyon School. He was a McDonald’s All-American and was named the state’s MaxPreps Player of the Year as a senior.
McCoy helped the United States win gold medals at the FIBA U-17 World Cup in Turkey in 2024 and the FIBA U-19 World Cup in Switzerland in 2025.
Michigan enters the 2026-27 season as the defending national champion. Boynton replaced Dusty May, who left in June to become head coach of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.
