New York Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon was diagnosed with a left thumb sprain and placed on the 10-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Thursday.

The Yankees recalled utility ‌man Max Schuemann from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

McMahon was hurt Wednesday during New York’s 5-3 road win over the Baltimore Orioles when he jammed his thumb sliding ‌into second base. He was replaced by Jose Caballero later in the game, and Caballero started at third Thursday in a 6-1 victory.

The Yankees also have Amed Rosario as an option at third base. Rosario was in the starting lineup for their series opener Friday against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.

McMahon told reporters Thursday that nothing in his thumb was broken, but he was going for further scans before a decision was made.

McMahon, 31, came over ‌from the Colorado Rockies at the 2025 trade deadline. In his first full season with the Yankees, he is batting .216 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs across 106 games.

The 2024 All-Star is a career .237 hitter with 154 homers and 502 RBIs for the Rockies (2017-25) and ‌Yankees.

Schuemann, 29, spent part of the season with the major league club before ‌being sent down this month to make room for trade-deadline acquisitions. He batted .194 with two homers and eight RBIs in 41 games and appeared at all three outfield positions, shortstop, third base and second base. He also pitched an inning, allowing no runs.
