Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Tuesday that starting pitcher Trey Yesavage underwent surgery to repair the meniscus cartilage in his left knee.
The Blue Jays labeled Yesavage, who’s on the 15-day injured list, as being week-to-week. But with Toronto trailing five teams in the chase for the final American League wild-card spot, there’s a chance Yesavage might sit out the rest of the year.
The 23-year-old rookie right-hander has fashioned a 5-5 record with a 3.65 ERA in 18 starts this season. He has compiled 91 strikeouts versus 46 walks in 93 2/3 innings.
Yesavage debuted last season, going 1-0 in three starts with a 3.21 ERA before helping Toronto reach the World Series, posting a 3-1 mark and a 3.58 ERA in six postseason games (five starts).
The 2024 first-round pick of the Jays lasted just two innings in his most recent start Aug. 4 before he was removed.
With Kevin Gausman dealt to the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline and recent pickup Jameson Taillon placed on the 15-day IL on Tuesday, the Blue Jays must dig deeper to fill their rotation.
