Charlotte fired head basketball coach Aaron Fearne on Tuesday after three seasons.

The 49ers finished with a 17-17 overall ‌record this season (9-9 in the American Athletic Conference) and extended their drought of missing the NCAA Tournament to ‌21 years.

“We have high expectations for all of our athletic programs at Charlotte, and while difficult, making a head coaching change is necessary to allow for greater success,” Charlotte athletic director Kevin White said. “Aaron Fearne has been an invaluable assistant and head coach at Charlotte. We thank him for all that ‌he has done and wish him the very best in his career.”

Fearne, from Australia, worked on Charlotte’s staff as an assistant coach from 2018-23 before being tabbed as the interim ‌coach after Ron Sanchez left the 49ers’ head-coaching post ‌to become associate head coach at Virginia.

Fearne guided the 49ers to a 19-12 record (13-5 AAC) in 2023-24 before limping to an 11-22 mark (3-15 AAC) the following season.
