Nov 04 (Field Level Media) – Greece’s Maria Sakkari was the only seeded player to advance to the next round of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open on Wednesday.

The fourth-seeded Sakkari rallied from a set ‌down to defeat Maya Joint of Australia 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and advance to the quarterfinals. The match lasted two hours, 14 minutes, during which Sakkari used seven aces and won five of 14 break points.

Seeds that lost were ‌No. 5 Talia Gibson of Australia and No. 8 Katie Boulter of Great Britain.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus needed just over three hours to defeat Gibson 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7). Gibson held a pair of match points in the third set tie- breaker, but Sasnovich fended them off and later converted the second of her two match points to win.

Claire Liu, an American, had a much easier battle against Boulter in winning 7-5, 6-4 in one hour, 47 minutes. Antonia Ruzic of Croatia defeated Russia’s Alina Charaeva 7-6 (5), 6-4, and Mika Stojsavljevic of Great Britain knocked out another American, Sofia ‌Kenin 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Chennai Open

Top-seeded Janice Tjen of Indonesia moved a step closer to defending her title in Chennai, India, with a 7-6 (1), 6-1 win over Joanna Garland of Taiwan at the WTA 250 event.

Garland matched Tjen almost point for point in the first set but couldn’t contend in the tiebreaker. She won the first point on her serve, ‌then lost seven straight. Her serving woes continued in the second set, when she was broken twice ‌in the nearly two-hour match.

Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, a 17-year-old wild card, became the first Indian player to reach a WTA quarterfinal in 14 years with her 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Polish qualifier Weronika Falkowska.

Sixth-seeded Polina Kudermetova of Uzbekistan topped Russia’s Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-3, 6-0, and American Robin Montgomery beat Jeline Vandromme of Belgium 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
