Oct 28 (Field Level Media) – Hall of Famer and Atlanta Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins is the new general manager of the Alabama State men’s basketball program, the school announced.

Wilkins, 66, will help the ‌Hornets with “strategic initiatives in fundraising, donor engagement, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) partnerships, revenue sharing, roster planning, and student-athlete development,” according to Tuesday’s press release.

Alabama State, located in the capital city of Montgomery and a member of the ‌SWAC, slipped to 10-22 last season after making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011 in 2024-25. The school hired Chris Wright as the new head coach in April.

“To be at a place like Alabama State University is exciting; it’s a new challenge,” Wilkins said. “The programs are trending upward, so it’s an exciting time to join them and accelerate the growth.”

Wilkins, drafted No. 3 overall out of Georgia in 1982, played 12 seasons with the Hawks and later had stints with the Los Angeles Clippers, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs and Orlando Magic. Known as the “Human ‌Highlight Film” for his high-flying dunks, the nine-time All-Star and 1985-86 NBA scoring champion (30.3 points per game) was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.

“Wilkins’ impact extends well beyond his Hall of Fame playing career. After leaving the court, he built an equally distinguished career as a professional, and he embodies the very attributes we hope our ‌student-athletes will carry with them: excellence, integrity, and a commitment to others,” Alabama State athletic director Jason ‌Cable said.

“His passion for educating young people, his knowledge and experience in basketball at the highest level, and his genuine willingness to give back make him ideal for our program. We are proud to welcome him to the Hornet family.”

Alabama State opens the season on the road Tuesday against Texas A&M in College Station.
