Defenseman Mathew Dumba, 13-year NHL vet, retires at age 32

Oct 10 (Field Level Media) – Veteran defenseman Mathew Dumba announced his retirement on ​Friday after 13 NHL seasons.

A ‌first-round selection (seventh overall) of Minnesota in the 2012 NHL Draft, Dumba played 10 seasons for the Wild.

The winner of the 2019-20 ‌King ​Clancy Memorial Trophy, ⁠which is given annually ⁠for leadership qualities on and off the ice and humanitarian work in the community, played 11 games ​for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2025-26 before his contract was terminated ⁠in April.

“Matt Dumba is ⁠officially hanging up his ​skates after 748 NHL career games,” the ​NHL Players Association posted on social ‌media Friday. “Wishing the former blue liner and 2019-20 King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner the best of luck ⁠in his retirement!”

The 32-year-old Regina, Saskatchewan, native tallied 261 points (85 goals, 176 assists) with the ⁠Wild (2013-14 ‌to 2022-23), Arizona Coyotes (2023-24), ⁠Tampa Bay Lightning (2023-24), Dallas Stars (2024-25) ​and ‌Pittsburgh. He produced five goals ​and 10 ⁠assists in 54 career playoff games, 49 of which came with Minnesota.

He notched career highs in goals (14), assists (36) and points (50) during the 2017-18 season.
