Sep 26 (Field Level Media) – Reid Detmers pitched six scoreless innings of two-hit ball as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the host Seattle Mariners 7-5 Friday night.
Christian Moore and Zach Neto homered and Wade Meckler had four hits, including a double and triple, for the Angels (62-98). Los Angeles needs one more victory over the weekend to avoid the first 100-loss season in franchise history, which dates to 1961.
Dominic Canzone had three hits with a two-run homer for the Mariners (74-86), who scored all of their runs in the final two innings after falling behind 6-0.
The only hits Detmers (7-8) allowed were a one-out single by Canzone in the fourth inning and a leadoff single to rookie Michael Arroyo in the fifth. The left-hander walked two and struck out seven.
Mariners right-hander Bryce Miller (4-10) dropped his eighth straight decision since a 1-0 victory against the visiting Angels on July 2. He gave up five runs on six hits over six innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts.
The Angels opened the scoring in the first. With two outs, Meckler tripled to right and scored on a wild pitch.
They doubled their advantage in the fourth as Mike Trout drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on Meckler’s single to right. Vaughn Grissom lined a single to left to make it 2-0.
In the sixth, Meckler led off with a double to center and Grissom walked. With one out, Moore hit a three-run blast to left-center field to increase Los Angeles’ lead to 5-0.
Neto went deep to left-center off Mariners reliever Eduard Bazardo with one out in the seventh. It was Neto’s 27th homer, breaking his own franchise record for the most in a season by a shortstop.
Meckler came up later in the seventh needing a homer to hit for the cycle, but grounded out to second. He reached on an infield single in the ninth.
The Mariners got on the board in the eighth against reliever Sam Bachman. Pinch-hitter Lazaro Montes drew a one-out walk, Randy Arozarena and Canzone singled to load the bases and Julio Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Arroyo beat out an infield single to make it 6-2.
The Angels scored again in the ninth. Bryce Teodosio drew a one-out walk and came home on Neto’s double to left-center.
Seattle’s Weston Wilson drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning and scored on Arozarena’s triple to right-center. Canzone went deep to left off Luke Murphy to cap the scoring.
