Sep 24 (Field Level Media) – Tatiana Prozorova of Russia completed a come-from-behind upset of No. 3 seed Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in the Round of 16 at the Singapore Tennis Open, winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday.
Ranked No. 180 in the world, Prozorova was down 4-2 in the second set before storming back against the rising star, breaking Eala’s serve twice along the way. She slipped behind again 3-2 in the third set but broke back the very next game en route to winning the final four games of the match. The three- hour, nine-minute affair marked the first top-20 win in Prozorova’s career.
Prozorova draws China’s Xinyu Wang in the quarterfinals after Wang defeated Taiwan’s Joanna Garland 7-5, 6-4. No. 7 seed Maria Sakkari of Greece eased past Japan’s Nao Hibino 7-5, 6-1, and will meet Australian Talia Gibson, who was a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (1) winner over Slovakia’s Viktoria Morvayova.
Korea Open
Taylah Preston of Australia knocked out top seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-4, 6-1 in 1 hour, 17 minutes to reach the quarterfinals in Seoul.
Preston won 26 of her 32 first-service points (81.3%) and saved 7 of 8 break points. Meanwhile, No. 6 seed Anna Bondar of Hungary avoided a similar fate to Ostapenko’s and saved one match point before outlasting Armenia’s Alina Charaeva 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5) in three hours and 15 minutes.
No. 2 seed Kimberly Birrell of Australia defeated Yexin Ma of China 7-5, 6-3. No. 4 seed Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania brushed off a tough first set and rallied past South Korea’s Yeonwoo Ku 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1.
