Sep 23 (Field Level Media) – President Donald J. Trump is expected to attend Sunday’s final round of the Presidents Cup golf competition at Medinah Country Club near Chicago, Front Office Sports reported Wednesday.
The biennial event gets underway on Thursday with the U.S. squad looking for its 11th straight victory against the International (non-European) Team.
Trump previously accepted an invitation from the PGA Tour to serve as an honorary chairman of the event.
“I look forward to being there,” Trump said in an announcement last month.
He did not specify which date(s) he would attend, and the PGA Tour declined to comment on the president’s travel plans for security reasons. The White House did not respond to a request for comment from FOS.
During his first term in office, Trump attended the 2017 Presidents Cup at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey. He became the first sitting U.S. president to present the trophy to the winning team following the Americans’ 19-11 victory.
Last year, Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to attend the Ryder Cup. He was on site for the opening day of the competition at Bethpage Black Golf Course in New York.
The Presidents Cup will be the fifth high-profile golf event attended this year by Trump, but the first at a golf course he does not own. He was at LIV Golf events at his clubs in Virginia and New Jersey, the PGA Tour tournament at Doral and the Irish Open in Doonbeg.
