Sep 23 (Field Level Media) – ESPN college basketball analyst Chris Spatola died unexpectedly on Monday at the age of 47, the network announced.
Spatola was a four-year starting guard at Army before serving on active duty from 2002-07, including a decorated deployment in Iraq.
He joined the ESPN staff in 2015 and provided analysis during game and studio productions.
“Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster,” ESPN said in a statement. “He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Spatola, who married Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski’s daughter, Jamie, worked on the legendary Duke coach’s staff from 2007-12. That run included the Blue Devils’ national championship in 2009-10.
“There are no words to adequately express our heartbreak over the loss of our beloved Chris Spatola,” Duke said in a statement. “Chris served our country, was a devoted husband and father, and was such an important part of our family.”
Spatola averaged 13.9 points, 2.6 assists and 2.1 rebounds and shot 37.4% from 3-point range in 111 career games at West Point from 1998-2002. He ranks No. 10 on Army’s all-time scoring list with 1,543 points and No. 4 with 238 3-point field goals.
