Sep 18 (Field Level Media) – The New York Yankees said Friday that they will place outfielder Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to a right calf strain.
A corresponding roster move will be announced at that time, per the team.
The Yankees’ captain and three-time American League MVP was removed from Wednesday’s game at the Minnesota Twins after the sixth inning due to tightness in his lower right leg. He told reporters afterward that he felt it during the first inning and “tried to play it off” before reporting it to manager Aaron Boone.
Judge, 34, missed more than three months of the season due to a rib injury and only returned on Sept. 8.
“Once you start ramping up, things pop up,” Judge said. “Hopefully, it’s just one little thing and we’re back out there soon.”
The Yankees had Thursday off and begin a three-game series at the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.
Because the IL move is likely to be backdated to Thursday, Judge would be eligible for activation on Sept. 27, the final day of the regular season.
The Yankees (88-64) are five games behind the Tampa Bay Rays (93-59) in the AL East race. Those teams have the two best records in the AL and will play a four-game series in New York next week.
Judge has appeared in just 66 games this season, batting .241 with 18 home runs and 41 RBIs. In his seven games back from his last IL stint, he was just 4-for-23 (.174) with one homer and three RBIs.
