The Toronto Blue Jays acquired utility infielder Josh Smith in a trade with the Texas Rangers on Monday.
Smith, who has bounced between the major leagues and Triple-A this season, gets a fresh start in Toronto, while Texas is acquiring rookie left-hander Adam Macko, per the reports.
The Blue Jays are also set to receive minor league right-hander Josh Stephan in the deal.
Smith, 28, was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock last Friday. He was batting .213 with one home run and eight RBIs in 45 games for the Rangers, while seeing time at first, second and third base, along with left field. He batted .217 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 23 games with Round Rock this season.
A career .234 hitter, Smith has 32 home runs and 136 RBIs over five seasons (501 games) with the Rangers and has played every defensive position aside for catcher at the major league level.
Macko, 25, made his major league debut in May for Toronto. The seventh-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft is 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA in 22 games (one start), walking 10 batters and striking out 23 in 22 innings.
Stephan, 24, is in his sixth season in the Rangers’ minor league system and was 6-5 with a 5.44 ERA in 21 appearances (19 starts) at Triple-A this season.
