The Montreal Canadiens traded veteran forward Brendan Gallagher to the Vancouver Canucks for future considerations on Monday.
Gallagher, 34, was a cornerstone of the Canadiens for 14 seasons but had slipped down the lineup in recent years. He has one season left on a six-year, $39 million deal ($6.5 million average annual value) he signed in 2020.
The Canadiens agreed to retain 50% of Gallagher’s remaining contract value to make the deal happen.
Known for his crease-crashing style, Gallagher was drafted in the fifth round, 147th overall, in 2010 by the Habs. Gallagher played his junior hockey for the WHL’s Vancouver Giants.
Gallagher had 246 goals and 241 assists in 911 career games with Montreal. He also notched 14 goals and 20 assists across 79 playoff games.
