New England Revolution midfielder Dylan Borrero was assessed an additional one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine by Major League Soccer on Tuesday in relation to the red card he received on Sept. 21.

During the Revolution’s 4-0 road loss to Charlotte FC, Borrero entered as a 56th-minute sub. Just 14 minutes later, he delivered a sliding challenge that prompted the referee to issue him a yellow card. When Borrero argued the ruling, he was shown a second yellow card, which turned into a red card and prompted an automatic ejection.

A red card carries a subsequent one-game suspension, which Borrero served when the Revolution beat visiting Nashville SC on Saturday. However, MLS deemed Borrero’s conduct worthy of additional sanction, which will rule Borrero out for New England’s Wednesday road match against the Houston Dynamo.

Borrero, a 22-year-old Colombia native, has no goals and three assists this season in 14 matches (eight starts) for the Revolution. In three seasons with New England, he has five goals and six assists in 34 matches (22 starts).

The Revolution (9-17-4, 31 points) open play Wednesday six points out of the ninth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. New England has four matches remaining, the most of any of the teams fighting for the last Eastern Conference postseason berths.
