Oct 28 (Reuters) – The US health department will temporarily allow pharmacies and physicians to compound ‌drugs using a range of peptide ingredients, while regulators decide whether the substances should be ‌formally permitted for use in compounded medicines.

The peptides that are allowed to be manufactured are among the ones that an FDA advisory panel recommended be subject to fewer restrictions.

The panel had in July voted to loosen compounding restrictions on six out ‌of seven peptides under review, including the popular tissue-repair compound BPC-157.

Peptides, or short chains of amino acids, have boomed in popularity over the past ‌year, driven by endorsements from wellness influencers, ‌for uses ranging from anti-aging to muscle recovery and tissue repair.
