SAO PAULO, Oct 26 (Reuters) – Brazil has identified a second Newcastle disease outbreak in Santa Catarina state at ‌a poultry farm in Coronel Freitas, the Agriculture Ministry said late on Sunday.

The new case lies within ‌an existing restricted area, requiring only a small adjustment to the containment zone after an initial case was reported last week at a turkey farm in the nearby city of Nova Itaberaba, the ministry added.

• Sanitary depopulation of birds on the affected property has begun, along with epidemiological ‌investigation and containment measures, the government said

• The Newcastle disease case reported last week in Nova Itaberaba was Brazil’s first since 2024

• Santa Catarina accounts for around ‌15% of poultry production in the world’s largest chicken ‌meat exporting country

• China and Saudi Arabia halted poultry imports from Santa Catarina last week; Mexico imposed a nationwide ban
