MEXICO CITY, Oct 20 (Reuters) – Aeromexico will likely unveil a first batch of new US routes as soon as next week, Chief Executive Andres Conesa said on Tuesday, offering the clearest sign yet that Mexico’s flagship carrier is moving quickly to capitalize on Washington’s decision to lift restrictions on flights from Mexico City.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the Latin American & Caribbean Air Transport Association conference in Mexico City, Conesa said Aeromexico was weighing several US destinations but was holding off on naming them until it secures permits and airport slots.
• He said a first package of routes could launch early next year, with another potentially around mid-2027
• Last week, the US Department of Transportation scrapped curbs that had blocked Mexican airlines from adding new service from Mexico City’s Benito Juarez airport and Felipe Angeles airport
• Conesa pointed to San Juan, Puerto Rico as one route likely to return, though he said that service was more likely in the second half of 2027 due to the cruise season
• The executive also said Aeromexico now expects to resume flights to Caracas in the first quarter of 2027, later than previously planned
• Flight plans to the Venezuelan capital have been snarled by the deadly twin earthquakes earlier this year
• Aeromexico is pressing ahead with expansion even as fuel costs bite, though Conesa said airlines had been forced to raise fares to reflect the surge in jet fuel prices
