Oct 19 (Field Level Media) – The New York Yankees are bringing back Aaron Boone for his 10th season as manager, multiple media outlets reported Monday.
Boone, 53, will enter the final season of a two-year, $10.5 million extension he signed in February 2025. Hired to replace Joe Girardi in December 2017, Boone holds a 790-565 regular-season record.
The Yankees have reached the postseason in eight of his nine seasons, but have been eliminated in the American League Division Series in each of the past two years and have reached the World Series just once. New York lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games in 2024 and has gone 13 consecutive postseason appearances without a title, the fourth-longest such drought in postseason history. The Yankees’ 17-year title drought is the second-longest in franchise history.
Boone’s regular-season winning percentage of .583 ranks among the best in major league history, while the Yankees have finished above .500 in each of his seasons as manager. New York currently holds the major league record with 34 consecutive winning seasons.
As in the 2024 World Series, errors proved costly for the Yankees this fall. In Game 2 of the ALDS against the Rays, New York lost after committing three first-inning errors. Tampa Bay swept the Yankees in Game 3.
“You go through a lot as a group and then it’s just a sudden end,” Boone said after Game 3. “It’s the worst fricking feeling in the world. You know, again, offering that perspective with all due respect. And I have that perspective of we are playing a game. I understand that. But it doesn’t lessen the pain of the ending, you know, and hopefully that’s something that again continues to fuel guys that are going through this for the first time and then those of us that have been through it a lot.”
