Sep 21 (Field Level Media) – Kaitlin Quevedo of Spain turned a dominating burst to open the third set into a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nadia Podoroska of Argentina in the final of the SP Open at Sao Paulo, Brazil.
It was the first career WTA tournament victory for Quevedo, who made her tour- level debut in January.
Podoroska took the opening set by breaking Quevedo’s serve twice in the opening three games. More trouble emerged when Quevedo again was broken to open the second set but she dominated from there while winning 62% of her second-serve returns and saving five of nine break points.
Singapore Open
No. 5 seed Maja Chwalinska of Poland earned an easy 6-4, 6-2 victory over wild-card Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia in the first round as the French Open finalist looks to reignite the back half of her season.
Chwalinska, who moved on from France to lose in the first round at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, won the last four games of the second set to advance.
No. 6 seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the opening round over Kyoka Okamura of Japan. Joanna Garland of Taiwan and Talia Gibson of Australia also won first-round matches.
Korea Open
No. 3 seed Lanlana Tararudee finished off a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2 victory over Moyuka Uchijima of Japan in the first round at Seoul, South Korea.
No. 5 seed Maya Joint of Australia also advanced out of the first round with a 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-3 victory over China’s Xinxin Yao, as did No. 8 seed Kamilla Rakhimova of Uzbekistan, who was a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-5 winner over countrywoman Polina Kudermetova.
Also earning first-round victories were Dayeon Back of South Korea, Russia’s Alina Korneeva and American Katie Volynets, while No. 7 seed Magda Linette of Poland fell 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2) to Darya Astakhova of Russia.
