Sep 20 (Field Level Media) – The Texas Rangers are battling for a playoff spot, and they’ll have to ‌do it without the services of a key piece, as the team placed right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill on the 15-day injured ‌list Sunday, ending his regular season.

The Rangers recalled fellow right-hander Winston Santos from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.

Quantrill got the start Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays but exited with a right lat strain after just 1 1/3 innings. His velocity was notably lower than normal, which Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said the team knew ‌going into the game.

The 31-year-old posted a 9-5 record with a 2.86 ERA for the 78-77 Rangers, who entered Sunday’s play in first place in the American League West, a game ahead of ‌the Houston Astros.

Texas has taken the first two games of ‌a three-game series with Toronto, which concludes Sunday.

Santos, 24, has appeared in one game for the Rangers this season, pitching two innings, allowing two hits and two runs with a walk.
