WASHINGTON, Sept 15 (Reuters) – U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said on Tuesday that any probes that former federal prosecutor Joseph DiGenova had been handling would continue.
DiGenova, who oversaw a wide-ranging probe into past investigations of President Donald Trump, resigned last week.
“I very much appreciate the work that he did for us and for the administration,” Blanche told reporters at the White house. “Any investigations that he’s working on, of course, continue like they do, like any investigation does when somebody leaves, and we’re not going to slow down just because somebody leaves.”
DiGenova joined the Justice Department in April to take over the Florida-based investigation that has been scrutinizing several of Trump’s foes and has sought to establish that the president was the victim of a long-running criminal conspiracy.
The investigation has examined the 2017 U.S. intelligence finding that Russia sought to boost Trump’s first presidential campaign in 2016, as well as more recent investigations by former Special Counsel Jack Smith that probed Trump’s retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort and his attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat. The investigation has so far not resulted in any criminal charges.
DiGenova, a Trump ally, did not provide a reason for his resignation.
