Sep 12 (Field Level Media) – The Pittsburgh Pirates placed rookie right fielder Esmerlyn Valdez on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left hamstring injury.
The Pirates recalled second baseman Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.
Valdez, 22, sustained the injury while running out a grounder in the sixth inning of Pittsburgh’s 12-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday in the opener of a three-game series.
Named the National League Rookie of the Month for July, Valdez batted .232 with 17 homers and 47 RBIs in 72 games this season with the Pirates.
Simon, 26, went 9-for-32 (.281) with two RBIs in 10 games earlier this season with Pittsburgh.
