Sep 11 (Field Level Media) – Minnesota Twins star center fielder Byron Buxton is done for the season and will undergo arthroscopic right hip surgery on Sept. 18, the team said Friday.
Buxton has been dealing with a hip impingement that has sent him to the injured list three times this season. He last played for Minnesota on Aug. 25.
Twins manager Derek Shelton told reporters that Buxton should be recovered by the start of the 2027 season.
Buxton played in just 93 games this season but had 25 homers during the abbreviated campaign. He batted .254 with 46 RBIs and made the American League All-Star team for the second straight season and third time overall.
Buxton has played in 100 games in just three of his 12 seasons with the Twins. He played in a career-high 140 games in 2017 as well as 126 in 2025 and 102 in 2024.
Overall, Buxton is a career .248 hitter with 193 home runs, 482 RBIs and 124 steals in 991 games.
Minnesota (69-77) opens a three-game series against the visiting Cleveland Guardians on Friday. The Twins are 4 1/2 games behind Cleveland for the American League’s third and final wild-card berth.
