NYCFC acquires F Benie Traore as designated player

New York City FC acquired forward Benie Traore from Switzerland’s FC Basel 1893 on Monday.

The ​23-year-old Ivory Coast international ‌will fill a designated player spot and is under contract through 2029-30 with an option for 2030-31.

Traore registered 25 goals ‌and ​15 assists in 80 ⁠appearances across all ⁠competitions with FC Basel from 2024-26.

“Benie brings pace, versatility, and a proven track record of getting on ​the score sheet,” NYCFC sporting director Todd Dunivant said. “In addition ⁠to what he ⁠contributes on the field, Benie ​will also add to our locker ​room and team culture through his ‌infectious personality and team-first mentality.”

Traore has also played for Swedish side Hacken (2021-23), England’s Sheffield United (2023-24) and France’s ⁠Nantes (2024).

“I’m excited to join New York City FC and begin this next chapter ⁠of my ‌career,” Traore said. “The style ⁠of play, the ambition ​of ‌the club, and the belief ​shown in ⁠me made this the right opportunity.
