Avalanche re-sign D Brett Kulak, D Brent Burns

The Colorado Avalanche announced contract extensions Friday for defensemen Brett Kulak and Brent Burns.

Kulak, ​32, signed a five-year extension ‌through 2030-31 for a reported $22.5 million ($4.5 million per season).

Burns, 41, signed a one-year deal for 2026-27 for a ‌reported $850,000 (up ​to $3 million with ⁠bonuses).

Kulak played for three ⁠teams and skated in 83 games last season, totaling one goal and 11 assists with the ​Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Avalanche.

Kulak has 137 points (29 ⁠goals, 108 assists) ⁠in 663 career games with ​five teams since the Calgary Flames ​drafted him in the fourth ‌round in 2012.

Burns recorded 35 points (12 goals, 23 assists) in 82 games in his first campaign ⁠with Colorado in 2025-26.

A six-time All-Star and 2016-17 Norris Trophy winner, Burns will ⁠be entering ‌his 23rd NHL season ⁠in 2026-27. He is ​the ‌active league leader with ​1,579 games ⁠played.

Burns has 945 points (273 goals, 672 assists) and 887 penalty minutes with the Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes and Avs.
