Australian job vacancies fall 2.1% in May quarter

SYDNEY, June 25 (Reuters) – Job vacancies in Australia fell in the May ​quarter for the ‌first decline since the middle of 2025, data showed on Thursday, with the largest ‌drops ​in the ⁠finance, accommodation and ⁠food sectors.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed vacancies fell 2.1% ​in the three months to May, following ⁠a revised ⁠2.4% gain in the ​previous quarter. That also ​left vacancies down 2.1% on ‌a year earlier at 329,500.

Vacancies in the private sector fell 1.4%, ⁠while those in the public sector dropped 7.9%, with losses across ⁠most ‌of the sectors ⁠surveyed.

The largest fall ​of ‌21.4% was in ​the financial ⁠and insurance services industry, while accommodation and food services dropped 16.1%.
