Report: PWHL to announce San Jose expansion club

The Professional Women’s Hockey League will announce San Jose, Calif., as ​the home of its ‌12th franchise on Tuesday, The Athletic reported Monday.

It will be the fourth expansion team ‌starting ​play in ⁠2026-27, along with ⁠Detroit, Las Vegas and Hamilton, Ontario.

The PWHL has a press conference scheduled for ​12:45 p.m. PT on Tuesday at the ⁠SAP Center, home ⁠of the NHL’s ​San Jose Sharks.

The PWHL has ​now doubled in size from ‌its original six members in 2023: Boston, Minnesota, Montreal, New York, Ottawa ⁠and Toronto. Vancouver and Seattle entered the league in 2025.

The Bay ⁠Area ‌has been a ⁠popular expansion choice ​lately ‌in professional women’s sports, ​with ⁠the Golden State Valkyries joining the WNBA in 2025 and Bay FC joining the NWSL in 2024.
