Measles cases in South Carolina rise by 13 to 933, state health department says

Feb 10 (Reuters) – South Carolina reported a surge to 933 measles cases on Tuesday, ​state health data showed, ‌including 13 additional infections since Friday, as officials warned the widening outbreak could last weeks or months ‌amid ​lagging vaccine uptake.

The ⁠outbreak, which began ⁠in October, has been centered in the northwest part of the state, which includes Greenville ​and Spartanburg, according to the South Carolina Department of ⁠Public Health.

There are ⁠currently 235 people in ​quarantine and six in isolation. The ​latest end of quarantine for ‌these is March 5, the state health department said.

Of those infected, 859 were unvaccinated, 20 ⁠were partially vaccinated with one of the recommended two-dose measles-mumps-rubella vaccines, 25 ⁠were ‌fully vaccinated and 29 ⁠had unknown vaccination status.

Most ​cases ‌were reported in children ​in the ⁠five to 17 age group, followed by those below five years of age.
