Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will undergo an MRI on his injured left knee after ‍exiting Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers with 1:53 remaining.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after the game that the procedure would happen Sunday night or Monday ‌and acknowledged the injury “didn’t ‌look good.”

Mahomes was scrambling outside of the pocket when he was taken down from behind by the Chargers’ Da’Shawn Hand. Medical staff helped Mahomes limp to the locker room as Gardner Minshew entered ‍the game in relief.

The Chiefs trailed 16-13 and possessed the ball at midfield at the time ‍of the injury. Minshew’s fifth pass attempt was picked off by Derwin James Jr. at Los Angeles’ 18-yard line with 14 seconds left.

Mahomes completed ‍16 of 28 passes for 189 yards and opened the scoring in the first quarter ‍with ‍a 12-yard rushing touchdown.

The loss eliminated Kansas City (6-8) from playoff contention. The Chiefs had reached 10 ‌straight postseasons — the last seven with Mahomes helming the offense — and served as the AFC representative in five of the last six Super Bowls with three championships.
