NBA-Snow forces postponement of Pelicans game in New Orleans

(Reuters) – A New Orleans Pelicans home game set for Wednesday has been postponed by the NBA after a rare snowstorm blanketed the host city for next month’s Super Bowl, marking the latest disruption to the North American sports calendar due to extreme weather.

The Pelicans were scheduled to host the Milwaukee Bucks at 8:00 p.m. ET (0100 GMT) but the league said in a statement that due to extreme weather it would be played at a later date.

In New Orleans, which will host the NFL’s Super Bowl for a record-equalling 11th time on Feb. 9, a record 10 inches (25 cm) of snow accumulated in some places on Tuesday, turning Bourbon Street white and bringing the city to a near standstill.

The Pelicans game is the latest professional game postponed due to weather-related events as Los Angeles wildfires forced the relocation of an NFL playoff game, PGA Tour event and the rescheduling of NBA and NHL games in the city.

A Jan. 11 NBA game scheduled to be played in Atlanta was also postponed due to icy conditions in the area.
