Women’s Top 25 roundup: No. 19 Tennessee overpowers NC Central with record 3-point shooting

Samara Spencer finished with a career-high 33 points and led a record-setting day for No. 19 Tennessee, which humiliated North Carolina Central 139-59 on Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn.

Spencer added 10 assists and three steals, and five teammates also scored in double figures for the Lady Volunteers, who hit 30 three-pointers to set an NCAA record. Spencer supplied nine of those treys to break the school record, and Tennessee’s point total set a Southeastern Conference record.

Talaysia Cooper finished with 21 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals in 18 minutes for Tennessee (8-0), which entered the nonconference matchup third in Division I in scoring at 92.6 points per game. Tess Darby chipped in 17 points, Zee Spearman had 15, Ruby Whitehorn 13 and Sara Puckett 11.

Freshman Shakiria Foster led North Carolina Central (0-12) with 17 points, and Terriana Gray added 10, but she also was responsible for 12 of the Eagles’ 44 turnovers.

The Lady Volunteers scored the game’s first 20 points, led 33-10 after the first quarter and 69-18 at halftime. The lead reached 84 points late in the fourth.

No. 1 UCLA 102, Long Beach State 51

Angela Dugalic scored a career-high 22 points — 16 in the first half — and Lauren Betts also tallied 22 as the undefeated Bruins made quick work of the Beach in the nonconference game.

Janiah Barker collected 19 points and 10 rebounds, Gabriel Jaquez added 17 and seven, respectively, and Kiki Rice netted 12 points for UCLA (10-0). The Bruins led 16-2 midway through the first quarter, and the Beach never posed a threat.

Jada Crenshaw scored 19 points for Long Beach State (5-4), which shot just 35.6 percent from the floor compared to UCLA’s 55.7 percent. The Bruins dominated in paint points (66-22) and total rebounds (51-22).

No. 11 Ohio State 87, Youngstown State 39

Cotie McMahon scored a season-high 29 points, including 16 in the first quarter, as the undefeated Buckeyes routed the Penguins in the nonconference mismatch in Columbus, Ohio.

Ajae Petty added 19 points and 12 rebounds, Chance Gray supplied 12 points and Taylor Thierry had nine points, seven rebounds and seven steals for Ohio State (10-0), which entered the day averaging 87.4 points per game, 10th in Division I.

The Buckeyes jumped to a 16-3 lead in the game’s first five-plus minutes, with McMahon scoring 11 points. Ohio State led 23-14 after one quarter, and made it a blowout by holding Youngstown State (6-5) to four points in the second quarter.

Malia Magestro scored eight points and Faith Burch had seven points and eight rebounds for the Penguins, who had 34 turnovers, 11 in the first quarter.

No. 16 Kentucky 82, Purdue 52

Amelia Hassett scored 22 points, Georgia Amoore added 21 and all five of the Wildcats’ starters hit double figures as they recovered from a slow start to handle the Boilermakers.

Dazia Lawrence had 13 points and six assists, Clara Strack struck for 12 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks, and Teonni Key had 10 points, nine boards and three blocks for Kentucky (9-1).

Lana McCarthy finished with 12 points for Purdue (5-5), which led 12-8 after shooting 46.2 percent in the first quarter, while the Wildcats made only 28.6 percent from the floor, and were 0 of 7 on 3-point attempts.

Kentucky, which recovered to shoot 47.6 percent for the night, outscored Purdue 24-11 in the second quarter, with Amoore scoring nine points and Hassett six.

No. 20 Michigan 100, Detroit Mercy 54

Olivia Olson finished with 22 points and four steals in 20 minutes as the Wolverines blew out the Titans in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Te’Yala Delfosse scored 13 points and Macy Brown and Brooke Q. Daniels netted 11 apiece as Michigan (9-1) won its ninth straight game since losing to then-No. 1 South Carolina to open the season.

Aaliyah McQueen paced Detroit Mercy (6-2) with 15 points, and Emaia O’Brien added 11, but they combined to shoot just 7 of 22 from the floor. The Titans shot 31.4 percent overall while the Wolverines finished at 54.7 percent.

Michigan jumped to a 12-3 lead about five minutes into the game. After O’Brien’s 3-pointer trimmed the lead to eight points, the Wolverines put together a 10-0 run and led by 18 at the end of the period. They padded the cushion to 32 at halftime.

No. 13 Kansas State 74, Middle Tennessee 48

A tight first half gave way to a blowout in the second, as the Wildcats, powered by 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks from star Ayoka Lee, won on a neutral floor in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Bill Snyder Basketball Classic, held in the coach’s birth town the last two seasons, has featured Kansas State, where Snyder became the school’s all-time wins leader for football during a legendary career.

The Wildcats trailed 26-25 at the half, but they blew past the Blue Raiders in the third, outscoring them 27-12 to take control. Temira Poindexter and Jaelyn Glenn added 15 points apiece, while Serena Sundell notched 11 assists to go along with her five points.

Jalynn Gregory paced the cold-shooting Blue Raiders with 18 points. She was joined in double figures by Anastasiia Boldyreva (12) and Ta’Mia Scott (10). In shooting just 28.3 percent from the field, Middle Tennessee couldn’t eclipse 15 points in a single period, settling for just 10 in the fourth.
